Research Projects & Publications
Professor Ciclitira undertakes research into coeliac and inflammatory bowel disease. Investigation of coeliac disease involves studying (i) Identification of the toxic fractions in cereals, (ii) developing assays to quantify coeliac toxic fraction in foods for individuals with coeliac disease (iii) studying the disease mechanisms (iv) developing novel variants cereals of wheat, barley and rye which are non-toxic to individuals with coeliac disease but which retain the nutritional and baking qualities of the original cultivars. Research in inflammatory bowel disease involves studying the disease mechanisms including the role of bacteria in the development of ulcerative colitis and pouchitis, a condition that affects individuals who have had an ileoanal pouch fashioned after a total colectomy for ulcerative colitis.
